After much procrastination, I have finally set a date for the challenge that I have had my eyes on for the best part of 10 years. This August I will be attempting to complete the 3 peaks challenge here in the UK. That is to trek up the three largest peaks on the British Isles within 24 hours and includes the travelling time between them. I will start off with the big boy, Ben Nevis in Scotland, the tallest but also the most straight forward; then, to Scafell Pike in England, the shortest but most technical; and, finally to finish the challenge on Snowdon in Wales. I have never taken on such a challenge, previous to this, I have completed two 10km fun runs for charity but this will make that look like child's play. I am not the most athletic person alive and am usually found knocking back beers in Bodean's Restaurant or pottering with some camera rig in my day job then anything as remotely physical as this. I am finally listening to the advice of the great Alastair Humphreys: to publicly announce any challenges as a sure-fire way to keep your word, as know body wants to look like a fool in public.
As far as I remember, I have loved adventure but apart from the odd backpacking trip to foreign lands I have always shied away from anything too big. I was more of an armchair adventurer, reading about the adventures/challenges that others were doing, wishing I could do the same. I needed something physically challenging that would take me out of my comfort zone in this country that I could do in between work. The 3 peaks challenge is it!
I will be posting updates through this website and twitter, so feel free to follow my progress. It is going to be a mammoth task but I am determined to complete it!
Wish me luck!
